Fighting Hair Loss

By David P. Melamed, MD, MSc

Excerpt from the original article published February 2007...

“ A new era of nonsurgical hair restoration technology is here for men with hair loss.
For obvious reasons, most men are skeptical of treatments that promise to reverse hair loss. But a new era of hair restoration technology, using "cold" laser hair therapy (LHT), offers hope for those who don't have advanced hair loss. LHT alone and in combination with topical and/or oral medications has produced excellent results for men and women.

Also known as "cold" lasers, LHT uses therapeutic soft low-light level lasers (LLLL) that were developed in Europe for healing wounds, treating hair loss and other diseases of the scalp.

The LHT program uses a laser device with multiple lasers on a rotating head. The rotating head is housed in a moveable hood that is positioned directly above the patient's head. The patient is seated while the hood is lowered onto the head, approximately 2 cm from the scalp. The close proximity of the laser to the patient's scalp allows for maximum irradiation and minimal dispersion of the laser light energy.

LHT is effective in treating androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium. Based on the experience in my practice, 80 percent of patients with androgenetic alopecia report increased hair density after the first three to six months of treatment. Nearly all of my patients with telogen effluvium report complete cessation of shedding. The hair growth continues while patients complete the full one year of LHT and will taper after 12 months. Most patients will require monthly follow-up treatments to maintain their results. All patients who take oral or topical medications are encouraged to continue on those as well.

With LHT, we have the enhanced benefits of low-light level lasers that stimulate biophysical repair and neovascularization. This is a remarkable adjunct to the combination of other therapies we now have. It warrants further consideration and integration into practices serious about treating hair loss. “

Update: Laser Hair Therapy

Victoria Snee

February 26, 2002

It's a procedure we first told you about a year ago and it's

changed the lives of dozens of people. Laser hair therapy

promises to stimulate hair growth without the use of any

potions or pills. We sent our producer Joe Finkle to try it out a

year ago. WB33's Victoria Snee has his results in tonight's

Trendy Tuesday.

It's a fact of life for millions of people, especially men: hair loss.

In February of 2001, we sent our producer Joe Finkle to

Harmonix Hair and Skin Clinic to try a revolutionary new hair

loss treatment called laser hair therapy.

His hair had been thinning for years and nothing he tried--

everything from Rogaine to Propecia-- seemed to work.

He met with Dr. John Wright who said Joe would be a perfect

candidate.

"We're reducing the loss of hair and we're increasing the

volume and then over time we're gonna grow some hair," said

Dr. Wright at the time.

Starting three times a week, Joe came in and sat under the

laser for 30 minutes at a time.

It's a “soft” laser, meaning the patient doesn't feel the light or

any heat.

The laser circles around the head, stimulating blood flow to the

scalp, and in turn stimulating hair growth.

When Dr. Wright first started this procedure he had about ten

patients. Now, a year later, he has 120. The number and the

results keep growing.

"It changes their life. It really does,” said Dr. Wright. “The

confidence you can see it just out of them when I talk to them

and I see the results in the morning.”

A year later, Joe's progress is impressive. You can see hair

growth at every angle.

"It is a process,” admitted Joe. “I've got four shampoos. I've

got vitamins. I have to drive 45 minutes here and back to sit

under this thing for 30 minutes so yeah, it is a lot to do but it's

worth it."
