Acne Scar Treatment

Acne Scar Treatment in Albuquerque, NM

Many of our clients have acne scars – evidence of previous flare-ups, often from years ago. Although genetics play a role, about 95% of all acne patients will develop some acne scars, from mild to quite obvious. Both active acne and acne scars are known to contribute to depression, a lack of self-confidence and other emotional distress.

Fortunately, here at Clearwaves Medical Laser Group, we have treatments both for active acne and acne scarring. For Acne Treatment Options Click Here

We have three acne scarring treatment options:

Regenlite Laser for Acne Scars

Can you imagine an acne scarring treatment that doesn’t hurt, has no downtime, has fast results, treats

acne and acne scars at the same time, is extremely safe, and has a lower price than virtually any other acne scar treatment? It’s Regenlite!

The Regenlite laser works differently than any of the typical acne scar lasers. It is safe in all skin types, and is the first device that allows us to treat acne scarring with virtually no pain, risk, or downtime… at a lower price than virtually any other acne scarring option available. The Regenlite laser works best for “soft” acne scars (“rolling scars”) that don’t have “hard” edges (like “icepick scars” or “boxcar scars”). For icepick and boxcar acne scarring, the Profractional laser is more effective. Many clients have a mixture of different types of scars. Therefore, we will often combine both of our advanced acne scarring technologies to get the “best of both worlds!”

There are three types of available laser treatments for acne scarring: fully ablative laser treatments, non-ablative laser treatments, and fractional treatments (both ablative and non-ablative).

Fully ablative laser treatments vaporize entire layers of skin cells at very high temperature. While it’s very effective, it is associated with a high incidence of side effects and typically requires a lengthy healing period (many weeks).

*

Non-ablative laser treatments can have a lower incidence of side effects and shorter healing time, but, generally, require numerous treatments to achieve minimal and temporary results.

*

Fractional laser treatments were designed to get the “best of both worlds” the effectiveness of the ablative lasers with the gentleness of the non-ablative lasers. This is the treatment we’ve done for years. It works. However, there is still some risk, some downtime, and some discomfort.

The Regenlite works DIFFERENTLY – It works to repair, strengthen, and improve skin structure, which helps “smooth and soften” acne scarring.

And, whereas the Profractional tends to flare existing acne, the Regenlite TREATS current acne at the same time! Got wrinkles? It’ll treat those, too! Redness to your skin? It’ll help! About the only thing it doesn’t seem to treat are sun spots (but, don’t worry, we have other options for those!)

How does the Regenlite work?

What makes the Regenlite so fascinating isn’t just THAT it works… but HOW it works!

Without getting too technical, the Regenlite remodels the skin, from the inside out. With acne scarring, the skin structures are damaged, which is why scars appear depressed into the skin. The Regenlite activates your body’s own natural processes to repair that damage, and remodel the “sunken in” areas so that the areas are flatter and smoother, similar to like they were before they were damaged.

Studies have shown that one Regenlite treatment can stimulate new collagen growth 99.5% (compared to an average of ~40% with most fractional treatments) and 198% in two treatments! Wrinkle depth has been shown to be reduced 55% in just one treatment, although 3-6 treatments is generally recommended for optimal results.

This treatment is also used for red Stretch Marks, Rosacea, Eczema, Psoriasis, Veins, Acne, and other inflammatory and pigmented conditions. This is a non-invasive and painless treatment. It is safe for all skin types, although darker skin types may need more treatments for optimal results. Spacing the treatments every 2 wks (plus or minus a few days) is important for optimal results.

Micro Pen Elite for Acne Scars

*

The MicroPen Elite is our “in-between” treatment. It’s a bit more aggressive than the Regenlite, but, not nearly as expensive/aggressive as the Profractional treatment. Also, since heat is not used, it has almost no risk for hyperpigmentation that can rarely happen with the Profractional. There is also far less downtime with the MicroPen compared to the Profractional treatment. Although the Profractional will likely provide more improvement with any given treatment, the MicroPen allows a gentler, less expensive way to start working on your acne scars. By stimulating new collage formation and by repairing damaged skin, the MicroPen Elite rejuvenation device can help treat acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, and other skin imperfections.

How is the procedure done?

A sterile cartridge tip containing 12 points is attached to the Eclipse MicroPen™. Dr. Chavez will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin (either Hyaluronic Acid, for wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and stretch marks, or Hydroquinone, for melasma and other hyperpigmentation issues.) Dr. Chavez will then select the appropriate setting based on your needs. Next, the pen will be gently placed against the skin while simultaneously gliding over the entire treatment area.

What does it feel like? Does it hurt?

Most clients only feel the gentle vibration of the device, and say the treatment is virtually painless. Clients sometimes say that it feels like light sandpaper (or a cat licking) on the skin. Topical anesthetic is available for no charge. Simply come 30 minutes early for your appointment for this to be applied.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure generally takes 15-30 minutes, although this depends on the size of the treatment area.

What is the downtime?

Immediately after the treatment you will notice redness to the skin, and, you may have some pinpoint bleeding.

The total healing time depends on the setting used, the number of overlapping passes performed, and individual healing ability. On average, clients are pink from 2-4 days. Some patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours. Using appropriate skincare products (some available at our office), can help to speed up the healing process.

When will I see the results?

Visible improvement to the skin is generally seen progressively over the first several days and weeks. The skin continue to improve for up to 6 months after the treatment, as collagen production continues.*

How many treatments will I need?

Your specific skin concerns will determine how many treatments are needed for optimal improvement. For fine lines and/or very light acne scarring, a series of 2-3 treatments (spaced about 4-6 weeks apart) is likely sufficient. For deeper wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or deeper acne scars, it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 4-6 week intervals. A maintenance treatment once or twice a year is usually sufficient to maintain your improvement!

Sciton ProFractional Laser for Acne Scars

The Sciton ProFractional Laser is an Erbium laser, rather than a CO2 laser. Both are ablative (vaporize damaged skin cells), and both can be safe, however…

The CO2 laser generally gives you the most down time, and carries a greater risk of scarring and especially the loss of skin pigment (“hypopigmentation” or “depigmentation”). This is particularly risky in darker skin types, including Hispanic and Native American skin. The Fraxel and many other laser treatments are “non-ablative” (they don’t vaporize away the damaged skin cells, but instead only heat them to stimulate collagen.) This heat can also increase the risk for skin pigmentation problems (hypopigmentation and/or hyperpigmentation darkening of the treated skin.) Since we have a lot of beautiful exotic skin in New Mexico, we chose the Sciton ProFractional Erbium Laser, and we’ve been using it for over 13 years!

What is the ProFractional laser treatment?

The Profractional Laser Treatment is a “fractional” treatment that produces numerous tiny, deep columns in your skin without affecting the surrounding tissue. This reduces discomfort and shortens healing time while promoting the skin’s natural process for creating new, healthier tissue to replace the damaged cells.
